Louis Porter II

Greetings!

Writing, acting and teaching are my life’s work and I am happy to share some examples of each discipline with you.

Writing was my first love. As a writer, I have published in many areas, including poetry, memoir and journalism.  Indeed, writing in any one area has helped me grow stronger in the others.

Like a lot of people, I watched television and movies and dreamed of acting. I fell into it, got some experience and training, then did more and more various kinds of acting. On stage, I feel as if I am flying.

Teaching was another matter entirely.  I avoided teaching for years because so many members of my family excelled in that profession. But while working as a daily newspaper reporter, I was asked to lead a summer program for students interested in communication careers.  Sharing what I learned with the next generation was a great joy and I was hooked.  These days, as a teaching artist, much of my work focuses on poetry, memoir and performance, adapted for all ages.

I am now offering a series of learning opportunities, “The Baobab Workshops,” named for the tree found in Africa and other parts of the world that often provides shade for storytelling. These workshops help young people understand the Civil Rights Movement, Harlem Renaissance and various African American leaders.  I use history, performance, storytelling as well as writing exercises to make each workshop come alive.

So, there may be a possibility that you, your school or organization would like to work with me. I invite you to look over this web site and contact me so that we can make it happen.
